Manipur: Kuki Inpi Jiribam, Tamenglong, Noney re-imposes economic blockade along NH 37

After being suspended for two days civil society organisations of the Kuki community have re-imposed the economic blockade along National Highway 37 which connects Imphal and Jiribam. The decision comes after talks with the district administration did not turn out to be fruitful.
Earlier, the organisations during a discussion with the administration officials of Jiribam and Tamenglong had placed a charter of demands following which the economic blockade was lifted. The demands included
1. lifting the blockade of highways by Meetei organisations in Jiribam town and ensuring free access to medical and essential commodities for every community,
2. finding the whereabouts of 40-year-old L. Thianmuang, a resident of Vengnuam Dibong Khunou in Jiribam, who was allegedly abducted from his home on June 6 and
3. legal action against Meetei militants and Arambai Tenggol in Jiribam and its surrounding areas.
However, Kuki groups alleged that the demands were not fulfilled following which the decision to re-impose the blockade was made. The decision has been endorsed by Kuki Inpi of Jiribam, Tamenglong, and Noney, the Kuki Chief Association of Tousem Block, the Kuki Inpi Women Wing of Jiribam, Tamenglong, and Noney, and the Kuki Students' Organisation of Jiribam and Tamenglong.
The re-imposition of the blockade also led to a standoff between security forces and women from the Kuki community at Tatbung in Tamenglong on Thursday.
